Biography

Giuliano Sale was born in Cagliari, Sardinia, in 1977. He currently lives and works in Milan.

Giuliano Sale is a painter full of doubts, who investigates the psychological dimension of portraiture, highlighting the disorientation and moral uncertainty of his subjects through a fragmentation of their facial features. In his paintings, not only the anatomies but also the environments themselves become subject to a radical lack of form, a distortion that brings attention to the confusion of today's existential dimension. Far from trends, rigorous yet irreverent and caustic, Sale explores the ambiguities of our time with a fluid and magmatic language in which the chaotic elements of post-cubist grammar acquire a dramatic tension never seen before.

Giuliano Sale preposterously retrieves shreds of the pictorial imagery of Ingres, Matisse, Picasso, Caravaggio, and other masters, filtering them through a composite pictorial grammar that alternates precision and gesturality, construction and deconstruction, ferocity and elegance in an original and unique language. His subjects are the product of a mixture of edited and unpublished images, passed through the filter of a schizophrenic language, capable of blending fragments of antithetical alphabets and grammars in order to stage the image of a crudely deconstructed reality. It is evident, in fact, that Sale is reluctant to conceive of pictorial practice as the product of a linear, projective construction. Painting, as well as historical reality, is rather perceived by him as the result of an organic sum of errors and solutions, the extreme outcome of an erratic and labyrinthine path strewn with traps and obstacles.
