Biography
Alfio Giurato was born in Catania in 1978 and lives and works between Gorizia and Catania.
After obtaining his high school diploma from the Art Institute of Catania located in via dei Crociferi, he graduated in 2005 in painting from the Academy of Fine Arts of Catania with top marks and received a special mention for his distinguished academic path. From the beginning of his journey, he has always had a strong attraction and admiration for the great Greek statuary found in artists like Phidias, Polykleitos, Myron, Praxiteles, as their highest artistic expression. Always a meticulous observer, he wondered how those great artists achieved such an excellent degree of virtuosity and how painting could reproduce that same plasticity, managing to restore to the figures that vitality so present in Greek statuary. Studying the Renaissance, he encounters one of the most emblematic artists in the history of art: Michelangelo Buonarroti. Buonarroti, symbolically representing the starting point, will place him in front of forms transcended and corrupted by passions, "sick" forms distant from Greek classicism that would never have allowed the works to be "soiled" with those movements of the soul considered impurities within a formal reasoning made of beauty, balance, and virtuosity. The tensions arising between the Apollonian and Dionysian aspects in Giurato's works will become increasingly strong, and the study of all those signifiers that contaminate form and "sicken" it will be the main objective of his research, leading him to study in depth all those artists who, like him, posed the same questions.
