Biography
Paolo Maggis is an Italian artist who mainly works with painting. He was born in Milan on December 29, 1978. Between 1996 and 2000, he studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, attending the painting course under Professor and artist Beppe De Valle.
After completing his studies, he began his exhibition career, and in 2005 he moved to Berlin (Germany) until early 2008, when he relocated to Barcelona (Spain), where he currently lives and works. Several catalogs have been published about Paolo Maggis: "Paolo Maggis Monito(r)" by Skira; "Paolo Maggis, Cacho a Cacho" and "In Nodum Coacti" by Silvana Editoriale. In September 2011, the new book "Paolo Maggis" was presented at the Pan di Napoli, published by Carlo Cambi Editore, covering the first ten years of the artist's work in conjunction with the exhibition of the same name. In 2012, the new book "BIONERS – Paolo Maggis, Bigas Luna" curated by Roberta Bosco was also presented. In 2013, the same publisher released the book "Earth/Stars," which includes images from the eponymous cycle. In 2019, Zel Editore published "Close-Up," which encompasses works painted since 2015 that transform the image into an abstract circuit of elements, sometimes moving away from form only to get lost and other times to reconstruct it.
Fundamental to the development of his work is his friendship with artist and filmmaker Bigas Luna. Paolo Maggis has also written about art and culture for various blogs and newspapers. In January 2018, his poetry book "Il nome di Dio" was published by Samuele Editore, and he is currently co-writing the "Arte e libertà" column with Davide Rondoni for the literature magazine Satisfiction. In 2020, Paolo Maggis began recording his tracks at home, thus creating tHE cRAVING rOOTS, a musical and artistic project that aims for the participation of anyone who wants to be a part of it. The first album "Indigo" was released on September 31, 2022. In 2023, he participated as a set designer in the show “Non potevamo che incontrarci qui, mia danzatrice…” presented at the Castello Sforzesco di Milano; born from the texts of poet Davide Rondoni, choreographed by Ornella Sberna and the OrmarsLab Dance Company of Milan, of which Paolo Maggis is responsible for organizational direction, external relations, and set design direction.
